The floor tiles in my bathroom are set directly into 1.5" on cement, which itself is on a concrete slab. I want to put new Carrara tile on the floor. The building manager says that new tile can go directly over the existing tile, but I'm worried about future cracking since there are some hairline cracks in the existing floor. Must I remove the existing tile? Or, can I safely tile over existing (maybe use self-leveler first)?
The previous owner glued tile over the existing wall tile. The "new" tiles come off easily enough and the adhesive flakes off with a little bit of scraping. I assume that the "new" tiles were installed this way because it would have been to difficult or messy to remove the original tile from the plaster (on masonry) walls. I ultimately want to install subway tile. Can I remove the original tile without dancing the plaster underneath? Or do I need to demo the tiles and the plaster and then put up backer board.
If I have to go with backer board, what are your thoughts on Wedi board?
