Advice for Repairing Shower

Above is a couple of pictures of the work done in my shower by my plumber friend. He had to replace all the galvanized steel in there because it was touching some up-to-date copper piping (you know.. galvanic corrosion problems).

First question.

It seems that the walls have Drywall and are covered in plaster at the shower head. And below it's Drywall and covered in a concrete slab adhered to the drywall somehow and then tile placed over it. Has anyone seen the bottom part of the shower one before that could give me advice on repairing it?

Next. To repair the top shower part... A lot of people have advice on Plaster and Lathe repair, but i see none for my unique situation (Plaster over drywall?). Should I peel back the plaster more to expose the drywall and then repair that, and then repair the plaster once the drywall has set?

Here's my plan so far:

  • Replace the rotted wood in the bottom section by sawing it out then fitting a new piece which I will drill and screw into the studs.
  • Cut drywall to size and install and nail drywall to the new piece of wood.
  • Find some sort of concrete piece or make my own (Any advice on this would be great on how to find something like this)
  • Put sealer down, replace tile, install new hardware and live a happy life.

Probably something more important is: Is this something that would require complicated tools or is this a moderate to difficult DIY job?

I found a lot on plaster and lathe repair but I found none on my situation which is why I ask for help.

Thank you in advance.
