Hey DIY! I have a 16x24 foot cement pad in my backyard that was there when I purchased the home. It's pretty tall, 24 to 36 inches above gound. I was just drilling bolts for a pergola I plan on building and on the first hole I fought to get 3.5 or 4 inches down (it was not moving at all at this point), then the bit just went the rest way in without resistance. The bit is only 5 inches so I don't know how deep the void is, at least an inch.
Everything in this house is halfassed. Is it possible the prior owner somehow made a hollow structure to save money on the pad? Could it just be an air bubble? It's too late to drill more holes to see if it's a uniform problem without angering the neighbors!
Anyone encounter this before? Should I rethink the pergola idea? If it's a substandard pad, I wouldn't want anything over my family's heads that could come down without warning.
Thanks in advance!
