there are 2 walls I would like to remove. the 2 walls form a hallways with stairs to 1 side and a room on the other side. they are perpendicular to the floor joists.

I know that 1 or both are load bearing. 1 is directly over and under a wall, the other is floating between 2 walls in the basement, nothing over it.)

I brought in a contractor, who quoted me $1500 to remove both walls, and install a header, rough carpentry only. I accepted, but he never showed up to do the work.

Im very handy, I have all the tools I could need and enough balls to do it. But how does one actually go about KNOWING what is required to be structurally sound?

Is there an engineer that can come in and tell me "put this brace between the studs, put a triple 2x4 pillar on that brace, and put a 3"x10" laminated header up there and you will be up to code. If this person exists, what would be their title?

submitted by
