As a subscriber to the ChefSteps youtube channel, I've been wanting to cook food sous vide for the longest time. However, as a broke university student, shelling out several hundred USD for a sous vide circulator is currently out of the question. My solution was to build a ghetto sous vide rig. Less precision; more fun.
The rig consists of
STC-1000 temperature controller - the brains of the unit
Single gang extension socket - which allows me to connect to my heat source
A rice cooker, which serves as my heat source.
I wired the components together and housed them in a ghetto cardboard box.
I've been able to maintain temperatures within a 3 deg C band, which isn't particularly precise, but it does the job well. Food cooked with the unit is still deliciously juicy.
All in all a great use of an afternoon.
