My poor front yard.

My husband had a day off from work yesterday so for me that means I will be coming home to one of his projects. Many times this is a good thing. Today I'm not so sure. There was a stump from an old tree that was covered by my favorite, red flower bearing bush. In our backyard we have a pretty palm tree that is getting too big for the area that it is in. My husband decided he was going to remove the stump in the front yard and put the palm tree from the backyard in it place.

I drove up today and this is what I saw: http://imgur.com/a/JQSBO

My question is how can we fix this? My husband doesnt believe he will be able to fully remove the stump and hes not willing to pay someone. He is very optimistic that he can fill in the hole, replant the bush and just get some sod and it will look great. I on the other hand don't think it's going to look right. Our grass has never been in the best shape so I think sod will stink out like a sore thumb and I worry about the bush in the state it is in. Does anyone have any advice before he gets out there again today and possibly makes it worse?
