Converting Storage Shed to Woodworking Shop: Steps/Checks Before Insulating?

Location: IL, freakishly cold, hellishly hot...rain, humidity...

Background: I've been doing my woodworking out of my garage for the last 2 years and I've finally outgrown it. I'm planning on moving shop to the 10'-30' storage shed in the back yard.

Storage Shed: 10 x 30, 10 ft ceiling, concrete foundation, .5" paneling, 2x4 construction (including joists)

My Plan:

  • Seal any gaps I can see
  • Add hurricane ties to joists (poorly toenailed in)
  • Run some 10/3 cable and install 100 amp subpanel
  • Firestop cable openings
  • Insulate the walls with R15
  • Insulate the ceilings (up to, but not over the ridge vent) with something lesser (I haven't looked into, admittedly)
  • Drywall (and perhaps soundproof with something)
  • I will be heating and cooling it (I'm ok with losing some air, might look into some passive solar inserts

Where I'm hung up — Should I do anything else to the paneling aside from sealing it with foam/caulk and adding the insulation? If I was building it from scratch, I would have adding a flashing channel along the bottom panel/frame, but I'm not sure of anything I can do to remedy that short of pulling the panels (and soffit) off.

On that same note, I believe if I do choose to add vapor barrier, it will go toward the inside, so if moisture does get in from the bottom, my thinking was that it could likely cause mold.

And...where the hell can I get some ideas for how to build a swing out, insulated double door? I mean, I know of a way I could construct it, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything (particular sealing around it).

(sorry for the album quality...I'll get a fullshot of the shed if needed. I was just cleaning it out today and taking pics as I went along. Still a bit filthy. )
