This is our first attempt at using plywood for flooring. We first ground down all the nails in the old flooring, removed all the trim, then cleaned the floor really well. http://i.imgur.com/0urPsX0.jpg
We used 1/4 inch oak hardwood plywood (cost $24 dollars per 8ft x4ft sheet, used 1 sheet here) we had Lowe's cut the sheet into 6inch wide strips. To attach to the existing linoleum floor, we used liquid nails and a finish nailer. http://i.imgur.com/lKKiL0J.jpg
Once finished laying, we stained with minwax polyshades in Mission oak. I used 1/4 quart as it is an all in one stain and polyurethane together.

While it's not perfect and I don't expect it to last 100 years, it is a huge improvement for very little money. It looks like a rustic farmhouse hardwood floor
