Hey guys, I'm looking for a little help in direction for refinishing my deck. I've tried doing some research, but everything that turns up in google is either some obvious fake review site or things that don't really go into much detail.
Here's some pictures of what it looks like now: http://imgur.com/a/VdY7c
Here's my basic plan so far:
Materials (here's where I could really use some recommendations)
- rent a power washer, floor sander
- buy an orbital sander (because I'll use in the future anyway)
- buy sand paper (which grits will I need here?)
- buy deck stripper, deck brightener (which products are good here?)
- buy deck stain, sealer (recommendations?)
Process:
- apply deck stripper, wait appropriate time
- power wash - I've read some people say "don't power wash!" and some say "you can power wash, but use a fan-type nozzle"
- apply deck brightener/wood cleaner
- wait for brightening/drying
- sand floors
- sand spindles/rails (one redditor has recommended getting a flap wheel for a drill for the in-between areas, is that a good idea?) (this is also what the orbital sander is for)
- apply stain (is it better to use a pump sprayer, or apply with a brush?)
- apply sealer (I've read some comments from other deck threads saying that you should do the underside as well to prevent rot, is this good advice?)
I've got a few choices of stores nearby for supplies:
- HD, Lowe's
- kelly moore paints
- sherwin williams
- ace hardware (seems to carry cabot stuff in my area, which might be good?)
Feel free to tell I'm in over my head. :) Also, any general advice is welcome!
